RONS

RONS Mobile Mechanical System

RONS is a remotely controlled, mobile, mechanical system that includes a robotic arm capable of a relatively high level of manipulation. The purpose of the vehicle is to provide the Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician with a safe stand-off distance while performing hazardous neutralization procedures. The System consists of a diesel powered vehicle with a combined wheel/track system driven with hydraulic motors on which the manipulator arm is mounted. It has a multi-camera video system to provide the operator with viewing of both driving and manipulator operations under low light conditions. The system is remotely computer controlled via either an rf communication link or a fiber optic payout and retrieve system up to 1000 feet. The vehicle is to climb stairs, turn sharp corners in hallways or enter doors, traverse and climb grassy slopes, and navigate on snowy, muddy, and wet surfaces. It has its own toolbox from which it can retrieve both power and hand tools to perform the neutralization procedures.
