Problem: Selectively capture target species, either chemical or biological, for purification or detection.

Graphic reprentation of project process work flow BEADS Automated Immunoassays (259) Renewable Sensors for Chemical Detection (352) BEADS for Selective Analyte Capture (407) Particles Nucleic Acid Extraction and Purification (408) Renewable Chem-Bio Sensor System (409) Hand Held Biological Threat Detector (418)

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Capture target species on small particles to allow manipulation
  • Select particle type for specific application requirements (porous silica, magnetic or other particles)
  • Treat surface of small particles to selectively capture target species (biological organisms; chemical species)
  • Target species purification for biological applications
  • Direct detection applications

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Development of selective coatings for target analytes; surface functionalization; nano-beads and micro-beads used with renewable magnetic and non-magnetic bead-trapping flow cells for sensing applications; application of coatings to micro-beads for practical usage; development of automated fluidic systems for micro-bead and test solution manipulation; prototype component and subsystem design, fabrication, and evaluation; laboratory testing and validation with real-world complex samples; establish intellectual property position; publication of key results.
