Alternate Methods for Organism Detection (455)

Graphic representation of water sample approachs and comparisons Organism Specific DNA Detector Arrays (456) Broad Response DNA Detector Arrays (458)

Problem: Determine preferred DNA/mRNA measurement method for evaluating environmental exposure effects.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices through Instruments.

PNNL Solution:

Two technical approaches can be used to detect microorganisms

  • Used multiple, single organism arrays to detect specific organisms in sample mix
  • Used broad response array to detect fragments of many organisms; interpretation depends on pattern recognition based on prior response experience

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Nucleic acid extraction, oligonucleotide design, array printing, and array hybridization and detection.
