Water Screening for Microorganism Hazards (452)

Problem: Ensure drinking water safety by timely detection of any hazardous microorganisms (natural or man-introduced).

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments.

Graphic showing work process flow chart Concentrate Microorganisms for Analysis (453) DNA Array Basics (451) Very Selective Detection with DNA Arrays (454) Organism Specific DNA Detector Arrays (456) Tailored DNA Detector Array Preparation (457) Broad Response DNA Detector Arrays (458) Organism Identification from Array Response (459) Alternate Methods for Organism Detection (455)

PNNL Solution:

  • Pre-concentrate microorganisms from large volume water sample
  • Exploit DNA binding for selective organism capture
  • Specific analysis for microorganisms
  • Broad response to test for range of microorganisms
  • Analyze data and approve or reject water for safe consumption
  • Water screening capability for hazardous microorganisms

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Bead attachment chemistry, antibody development, renewal filter system development, bead handling methodologies, sample cell design for reliable bead exchange (rotating rod concept), fluidic systems, interface requirements to multiple sensor/detection technologies.
