Optical Signatures of Bacteria (330)

Problem: Need method to rapidly detect and identify bacteria

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Infrared spectra measured for various bacteria (in dry form) exhibit exploitable signatures
  • Evaluate spectra for a number of organisms to: a) determine key signatures, b) evaluate potential importance of interferences, and c) expand to mixtures
  • Expand signature library
  • Published findings

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spectroscopic understanding of molecules and bacteria; use of electronics to collect data; data processing and analysis; understanding and operation of FT-infrared spectrometers for spectra characterization; microbiological techniques in cell culturing; statistical analysis of large, complex data sets, data analysis to obtain key chemical and biological information; reporting of findings (including numerous open literature publications).
