Biological Sensors
Rapid Identification of Biological Materials (236)
Problem: Develop analytical methods to rapidly identify
unknown biological materials in the laboratory
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices
PNNL Solution:
- Use Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/ Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-MS) to characterize biological materials
- Employ soft ionization technique to obtain molecular weight information from sample components
- Analyze resultant components with time-of-flight mass spectrometer
- Catalogue characteristic component signatures for various organisms
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spore culture preparation (vegetative bacteria, sporulated bacteria); BSL2 Laboratory; statistically-based data analysis algorithms; MALDI-MS applications development; experimental design; signal distribution modeling; Algoworks peak detection algorithm (PNNL patent).
