Biological Sensors
Rapid Analyte Extraction from Soil Samples (316)
Problem: Need to rapidly extract chemical contaminants from solid samples in an environmentally safe manner
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Integrated Samples
PNNL Solution:
- Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) methods were proven for sample preparation in the laboratory
- Developed field portable SFE units for processing various numbers of samples [smallest unit: 1-2 samples, larger unit: up to 100 per day]
- SFE processing is performed automatically after operator loads sample into unit sample chamber
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Lightweight pressure vessel design and construction; novel vessel closure design for rapid, user friendly field use; automation of instrument operation to free up user; lightweight construction in rugged, field-portable packaging; unconventional materials selection/design; multiply redundant safety features; ergonomic design to allow facile operation while wearing full protective clothing (suit, hood, double gloves).
