Renewable Sensors for Chemical Detection (352)
Problem: Need renewable, highly specific chemical sensors to measure concentrations of key target chemicals.
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments
PNNL Solution:
- Some non-reversible surface treatments offer highly specific chemical capture but they can only be used once (non-renewable)
- Micro-beads allow these treatments to be used in renewable sensors
- Automatic bead cycling through a sensing cell enables repeated, highly specific chemical measurements
- Demonstrated for TNT and herbicides
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Development of selective coatings for target analytes; surface functionalization; micro-beads andrenewable columns for sensing applications; application of coatings to micro-beads for practical usage; development of automated fluidic systems for micro-bead and test solution manipulation; prototype component and subsystem design, fabrication, and evaluation; integration with detection modalities (e.g., fluorescence, etc.); laboratory testing and validation; establish intellectual property position; publication of key results.
