Chemical Sensors Using Selective Coatings (389)
Problem: Develop needed chemical vapor sensors by leveraging knowledge of vapor-polymer film interactions.
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments
PNNL Solution:
- Chemical vapor sensor requirements (targets/mixtures)
- Evaluate selective coating sensor option based on knowledge of chemical vapor interactions with polymers
- Develop/tailor polymers for specific sensor array requirements
- Select suitable sensor technology options (SAW, fiber optic, etc.)
- Fabricate sensors and arrays for evaluation
- Test sensor response to known and unknown analytes
- Develop multivariate/chemometric data analysis methods for target chemicals and probable interferents
- Use knowledge-based analysis methods for possible unknown chemical exposures
- Provide polymer, sensor and data analysis methods for deployment
- Demonstrate reliable systems for vapor analysis
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Polymer synthesis; selective materials synthesis and coating; thin film application methods; thin film characterization; multiple sensor test platforms; sensor array design and development; performance testing including response characterization and calibration; modeling vapor polymer interactions; array testing; statistical and chemometric data analysis (e.g., multi-variant methods, etc.); analysis algorithm development; software development for sensor array deployment.
