Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Adapted commercial spectrometer for enhanced infrared sensitivity
  • Measured plume and background data during controlled release tests at government test site
  • Developed analysis algorithms to improve the quantitative results
  • Results demonstrated that the method would be valuable for many environmental, HAZMAT, and security monitoring applications

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spectral measurements using FTIR spectrometer in passive, semi-active, and active measurement modes; adapt FTIR optics and signal processing electronics to improve data quality (S/N ratio); develop improved data analysis algorithms (including atmospheric effects) to provide better quantitation of vapor concentrations; field test planning and performance; data analysis and reporting.
