Direct Chemical Vapor Distribution Mapping (351)
Problem: Need small, portable equipment to rapidly map chemical vapor concentrations and gradients.
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits and Devices through Integrated Systems
PNNL Staff Solution*:
- Employ handheld IMS instrument to rapidly measure vapor concentrations
- Use small COTS GPS unit to provide complementary location data
- Integrate with laptop computer to record spatial chemical data in real time
- Drive integrated system over desired test area to record needed data
- Overlay data on aerial imagery and maps for optimal understanding
*Work performed during employment at INEEL.
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS); global positioning system (GPS); chemical mapping; spatial chemical data; data acquisition software development; sampling methodologies; data analysis algorithms; integrated data acquisition and control (chemical instrumentation and GPS unit); cartography, field testing and demonstration; field deployment.
