Non-Invasive, On-line Oil Condition Sensor (317)

Problem: Need rapid, non-destructive, on-line detection of a number of chemical indicators of motor oil degradation

Spectral Analysis Photo

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Analyze new and used oil samples to identify optical signatures for key indicators of oil degradation (e.g., oxidation, nitration, sulfation, and water contamination)
  • Lab test system reliably detected specific oil degradation conditions using in-line flow cell
  • Established design for practical sensor using measurements at discrete wavelengths

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Spectral transmittance (visible-infrared spectral regions) measurements on variety of oil samples to determine key spectral features for detecting target parameters; designed practical in-line optical cell to support on-line application requirement; bench level optical system design and assembly; proof of concept testing; data analysis; reporting.
