Monitoring Rapid Reactions in Solutions (333)
Problem: Need practical, non-invasive measurement method to study for rapid chemical reactions in solutions
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices
PNNL Solution:
- Develop advanced photoacoustic spectroscopy sample cell providing superior response time and sensitivity
- Use with short pulse laser sources to characterize chemical reactions in environmental and process samples
- Results provided understanding of Cr(VI) sorption/desorption rates on iron oxide samples
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Capabilities employed: Optical spectroscopy (UV-Vis-IR); optical sources for sample examination including FTIR spectrometers, lasers, Xe lamps, laser diodes; photoacoustic cell design and fabrication; development and use of laboratory PAS measurement systems for application studies; development of signal processing, experimental control, and data acquisition hardware and software; data analysis to obtain key chemical and biological information; reporting of findings (including numerous open literature publications).
