Non-Contact Field Chemical Identification (394)
Problem: Develop field methods to provide rapid identification of chemicals in transparent containers or on surfaces.
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Integrated Systems
PNNL Solution:
- Evaluate Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) instrument options and select Raman spectrometer for spectral measurements and field testing
- Prepare samples and record spectra for 196 chemicals
- Implement robust methods for single chemical samples and investigate methods for mixed samples
- Evaluate safety issues associated with measurements
- Develop measurement protocols for field measurements
- Conduct double blind field test to validate measurement methods
- Publish results of safety assessment, data analysis method evaluation, and field test evaluation
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Knowledge of hazardous industrial, military, and terrorist chemicals including synthetic precursors, product, by-product, and environmental transformation products; knowledge of illicit narcotics synthesis and transport; knowledge of laboratory and fieldable analytical methods and instruments for chemical analysis; knowledge of technologies for laboratory and field applications; spectral signatures for target chemicals; rapid identification using library search algorithms; analytical chemical analysis method development and documentation for routine use; adaptation of laboratory analytical instrumentation and methods for field use; final safety assessment of analytical method.
