Raman Database for Chemical Identification (395)

Photo and graphic showing Raman Spectrometer and sample spectra graphs for benign chemicals, military threat, and illicit drug

Problem: Need spectral database for important hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals to enable rapid field identification.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Measure Raman signatures for 196 chemicals, both important (i.e. CW agents, precursors, and degradation products; BW related compounds; illicit drugs; explosives) and common
  • Measure through various container materials (clear and amber glass, plastic bottles, commercial and police evidence plastic bags, and paper envelopes) and powders on open surfaces
  • Assess analysis safety issues

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Equipment and experimental methods for measuring Raman spectral data for chemical samples; establish laboratory protocols for recording reliable spectral database; sample preparation for analysis; record and validate Raman spectra for target chemicals; analytical chemical analysis method development and documentation for routine use; safety assessment of analytical method.
