Chemical Identification Data Analysis Tools (396)

Graphic showing unknown spectra and threat analysis solution flow for the rapid identification of target chemicals

Problem: Need robust tools for analysis of Raman spectral data to identify important chemicals in unknown samples.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Determine spectra for target and common chemicals in various container materials
  • Establish spectral masks to rapidly evaluate CW or explosives content (Is the material a threat or evidence?)
  • Establish analysis decision tree and spectral analysis identification method
  • Develop an advanced spectral search algorithm for chemical mixtures

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Decision tree creation for effective implementation of Raman spectroscopy in the field by nonscientific personnel (field agents) for identifying unknowns; design of spectral masks to rapidly extract key spectral features indicative of critical threats (CW agents or explosives); design of advanced algorithms for identifying chemical mixtures based on a new sequential projection pursuit with random scan sampling algorithm implementation.
