In-Situ Sensor for Lead and Cadmium (8)
Problem: Determine concentrations of lead and cadmium in ground water at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency drinking water standard levels
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments
PNNL Solution:
- Developed compact, fieldable sensor based on electrochemical detection
- Developed sensor suitable for deployment using cone penetrometer equipment
- Developed second generation sensor and instrument for field evaluation
- Adapted sensor so it can detect TNT explosives
- Jointly received patent with NMSU
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Stripping voltammetric measurement methods & principles; electrode material evaluation; probe configuration design; system parameter optimization; laboratory testing including assessment of real-time measurement performance, interference effects, short term stability, & overall system performance evaluation (demonstrating ppb detection limits); computer control and data acquisition software/system development; field test planning; field testing.
