Remote Chemical Vapor Characterization (19)

Chemical Sensing Macro-Property Measurements

Problem: Need ability to remotely measure quantity and location of airborne chemical species in the atmosphere

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Obtained analyte optical signatures and performed atmospheric modeling to select measurement spectral region
  • Optimized design using trade studies
  • Developed LIDAR instrumentation to support required field measurements
  • Conducted field demonstration and data analysis to meet client criteria

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Infrared spectroscopy; tunable laser technology including wavelength tuning and/or stabilization, emission modulation, and temperature control; gas- and solid-state lasers; optical system design, fabrication, and evaluation; analog and digital electronics for drivers, controllers, signal processing, data acquisition, and data analysis; performance modeling to support trade-off analyses and for performance prediction; development of practical deployment options; analyte and atmospheric optical properties (transmission, absorption, and scattering); data analysis algorithm development; software development for system control and data analysis and reporting.
