IMS response is governed by the complex gas phase ion-molecule interactions. Understanding these interactions allows for manipulations of the reactions to force the formation of desired ions to enhance selectivity in difficult matrices. This is often done by the addition of specific dopants and by control of critical IMS tube conditions such as temperature.
