Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Instruments.

PNNL Solution:

  • Leverage fluorescence based threat bio-threat detection mechanisms
  • Develop sealed cassettes for simple sample handing and sample archiving
  • Develop compact instrument design including sample cassette, optical detection, electronics, mechanical housing, software, and user interface subsystems
  • Can use aptamer or antibody assays
  • Unit sealed for easy decontamination

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Development of selective coatings for target analytes; surface functionalization; nano-beads and micro-beads used with renewable magnetic and non-magnetic bead-trapping flow cells for sensing applications; application of coatings to micro-beads for practical usage including utilization of reporter technologies to enable detection (fluorophores, quenchers); development of automated fluidic systems for micro-bead and test solution manipulation; development of electronic and package components for prototype system; software development for instrument control and data processing; fabrication, and evaluation; laboratory testing and validation with real-world complex samples; establish intellectual property position; publication of key results.
