Rich-Sensing Environment Building Controls (345)

Problem: Improve building energy efficiency with high occupant satisfaction by improving building system controls

Expanded sensor suites in PNNL buildings resulted in improved occupant comfort and lower operating costs

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits and Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Determine that sparse sensor deployment can result in uneven building conditions and inefficient system operations
  • Deploy low-cost, wireless sensors to create cost-effective, sensor-rich environment
  • Implement improved controls by leveraging additional data
  • Evaluate impacts and savings

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs:

  • Understand thermal comfort and lighting conditions for a highly productive work environment.
  • Understand occupants needs.
  • Understand fundamental physical phenomena of sensing methods to measure physical properties of ambient indoor and outdoor air and lighting conditions.
  • Specify, select, install, configure single- and multi-sensor devices.
  • Integrate sensor and control devices into commonly used legacy building energy management systems.
