Autonomous Sensors for Shipping Containers (212)

Man in front of a stack of warehouse containers, pallet tag, and handheld tag reader Photo shows handheld reader down loading data from nearby containers, pallet tag, and handheld tag reader.

Problem: Need to track long-term environmental exposure data for materials stored in sealed shipping containers.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart):
Circuits & Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed small, autonomous, battery powered modules with:
    • Sensors (temperature, 3-axis shock)
    • Data recording (time history)
    • Radio link for data download
  • Developed handheld reader to allow data down load for nearby containers (including those hidden from view)
  • Demonstrated system performance
  • FLC Award winner in 2002

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Analog and digital circuit design and implementation; compact, low power electronic design; sensor selection and interface design; microprocessor application with embedded software; energy efficient task scheduling; compact RF antenna design; RF communication links; packaging design for compact, robust deployment modules.
