Distributed Energy Resource Assessment (346)

Problem: Need thorough understanding of distributed energy resources (DER) options to meet energy demand growth

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Develop models for technical and economic analysis
  • Investigate DER feasibility to provide ancillary services such as spinning reserve, system inertia and system stabilization
  • Develop DER databases and methodology to analyze economical benefit of DER applications

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Power system dynamics analysis; development and applications of power system simulation algorithms; study of electric economics impact on power system operation; power system economical model development; use of major power system simulation software including PSLF (GE), PSS/E (PTI), and HABITAT/DTS (ALSTOM); modeling of residential appliances; development of distribution system simulator and system identification toolbox; deregulation and restructuring; power system modeling; software development; data acquisition and interpretation; utility-scale wind turbine generator design, development, testing and failure analysis; wind turbine and wind/diesel hybrid systems R&D; wind farm design, development, construction, operations and engineering support.
