Project Activity Scope (from Electronics Technology Overview Chart): Circuits and Devices through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Provided PNNL's Electricity Infrastructure Operations Center (EIOC) which meets the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulatory requirements for back up control centers
  • Negotiated* data access to most US grid data
  • Using client models, participating utilities used the EIOC as a backup center to meet short-term backup requirements

*Note that data confidentiality requirements prohibit data release in most cases, but it can be leveraged for the development of new grid technologies.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: EIOC facility, High Performance Computing environment, high bandwidth data acquisition capability, and industry standard Energy Management Software (EMS). The EIOC provides a shared computational facility that can reduce regional utility costs.
