Problem: Need automated coating system to enable more cost effective application of electrospark deposition (ESD) coatings.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed automated coating system leveraging demonstrated tool pressure control method.
  • Integrated tool controller with work piece manipulation system to allow automated coating of test pieces.
  • Demonstrated for flat and cylindrical test pieces.
  • Suitable for application to irregular shape test pieces.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Developed a mechanical workstation to allow ESD coating of components; developed control software for the workstation to allow automated ESD coating of components of various geometries (e.g., flat plates, cylinders, irregular surfaces, etc.); developed coating process control software leveraging PNNL control algorithm; integrated system for evaluation testing; conducted successful demonstrations; established intellectual property position.
