Process Feedback for Improved Coatings (381)

Problem: Improving electrospark deposition (ESD) coating consistency requires effective control of tool pressure during coating operation.

Graphic representing audio tone frequency and probe pressure.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors and Devices through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Direct pressure measurements were not practical.
  • Determined that peak current levels correlate with tool pressure.
  • Developed module to provide audio tone indication of tool pressure variations to operator.
  • Successfully demonstrated that audio feedback allowed improved coating consistency.
  • Deployed system for practical use.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Testing determined direct probe pressure monitoring was not viable for routine use; established correlation between peak current levels and probe pressure; developed current analysis algorithm that allowed reliable indication of desired operating conditions; developed audio tone indicator circuit to aid operator in maintaining desired film properties; conducted successful demonstrations; established intellectual property position; delivered prototype units for practical field evaluation.
