Problem: Need tighter control of substation/inter-tie operation to ensure effective use of limited system capacity

PNNL Solution:

  • Design substation control system to automate power system operation during abnormal conditions
  • Develop software to provide tighter, real-time control of major transmission system assets
  • Enable better utilization of resources through improved control

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Power system operation; evaluation of power system relays; power system protection analysis; application of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA); design and implementation of substation automation; switchgear applications for prompt control; application of control theory; hardware and software implementation; application of optimization theory to improve automation performance.
