Grid-Responsive Load Field Evaluation (440)

Problem: Evaluate effectiveness and customer acceptance of distributed load controls for improving grid reliability.

Photo and graphs: map showing WA and OR states and a modified appliance with graphs showing appliance curtail reliably for each under-frequency event.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Controls and Measurements through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Established test sites in Washington and Oregon
  • Solicited program participants
  • Modified and installed clothes dryers with GridFriendly Appliance™ (GFA) controllers in test homes
  • Monitored grid and appliance behavior during periods of grid stress
  • Preliminary results indicate:
    • Appliances respond reliably to grid stress conditions
    • Appliance owners did not notice

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Develop evaluation project strategy; establish collaboration with key team members (utility and equipment manufacturer); solicit regional consumers to participate in evaluation program; install equipment with GFA controllers and instruments to monitor performance; establish performance monitoring communications, data collection system, and data analysis tools; validate performance of individual site installations and overall data collection system; monitor performance of GFA equipment and regional grid to assess effectiveness of load shedding resulting from the use of GFA equipment; analyze performance data and report results.
