Improve Electrical Grid Effectiveness (310)

Problem: Need methods that allow secure operation of the electrical grid with reduced (minimal) reserve margins

Graphic of solution to methods that allow secure operation of the electrical grid

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Generation or load variations can cause line frequency excursions and grid instability
  • Distributed load control can help minimize frequency excursions
  • Identify appliances available for load shedding without reducing user benefits
  • Estimate value of load response to power grid and customer impact
  • May deliver up to 100% of needed power grid frequency control

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Electrical power system dynamics and stability analysis including transient stability analysis; power system modeling and simulation; application of control theory; voltage stability assessment; small signal stability analysis; electrical power system dynamics analysis; load modeling; model validation; software development; energy end-use metering; electric power frequency stability and control; power system economics; energy efficient process control.
