PNNL Solution:

  • Distributed load control can help minimize frequency excursions and improve grid reliability
  • Devise effective sensing and control method based on frequency excursion
  • Design practical sensor and control unit for residential use
    • Establish Intellectual Property position
  • Rapid prototype fabrication
  • Complete 100 prototype units for test and evaluation
  • Successfully demonstrate prototype unit performance

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Electrical power system dynamics and stability analysis; application of control theory; electric power frequency stability and control; power system economics; energy efficient process control; sensor selection (commercial grid frequency sensor) and interface design; analog and digital circuit design and implementation; compact, low power electronic design; microprocessor application with embedded software; fabricate rapid prototype control modules for demonstration and evaluation; packaging design for compact, robust deployment modules.
