Electrical Grid Vulnerability Analysis (265)

Graphic representing electrical grid vulnerability

Problem: Need to understand the vulnerability of the electrical to natural and man-made effects including use abnormalities

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Controls and Measurements

PNNL Solution:

  • Evaluate electrical grid system design and performance to identify weak links/nodes that are sensitive to abnormalities
  • Identify and assess possible disruptive natural and malicious acts
  • Recommend actions that can reduce grid vulnerability

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Reliability analysis of power grid and devices; power system stability analysis; data acquisition and interpretation; dynamic decision; equipment failure analysis; relay protection evaluation; failure analysis based on probability theory; investigation of natural effects on vulnerability; evaluation and development of power system islanding techniques; application of communication network; study of electricity market impact on vulnerability.
