Optical System for Hot Cell Deployment (140)

Control Center for Long-Reach Robotic Arm and End-Effectors in a Radioatctive Work Zone

Problem: Develop laser-optical system to provide in-cell laser ablation and real-time imaging of radioactive materials

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits & Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Reviewed facility configuration and design/operational constraints
  • Developed design with laser source on cell roof, roof optical penetration, in-cell optics, and safety enclosures
  • Fabricated, installed, and demonstrated system operation
  • Delivered design documentation

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical system design including source, optical penetration, and in-cell optics for near-UV operation; pulsed laser with harmonic generation optics; mechanical system design including capability for remote assembly and maintenance for in-cell components; video system; electrical equipment design including laser control, monitoring, and safety interlocks; electrically controlled translation, rotary stages, and motorized focus control; laser safety calculations; laser shielding and enclosure design; laser operating permit development; design documentation.
