Electrical Grid Power Quality Management (441)
Problem: Problem: Need effective management of electrical grid power quality (PQ) to ensure stable service and customer operations.
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems.
PNNL Solution:
- Utilized a multi-tiered strategy to improve power quality management
- Developed tools for automatic reduction of distributed loads during critical grid operating periods to reduce regional PQ degradation
- Developed equipment to prevent the propagation of in-facility poor power quality effects onto the grid
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Experience developing a suite of grid-responsive controllers and their algorithms; knowledge of harmonic power quality issues in electrical power distribution systems; knowledge of power factor correction needs in electrical power distribution systems; knowledge of indicators of grid stresses that can be observed from the electrical signal available at any wall socket; low-voltage power electronic controller design and development for distributed electrical loads; identification of interruptible distributed equipment in large scale use; simulation and prediction of aggregate benefits that can be achieved by inserting power quality correction within electrical distribution systems; field demonstration of load controllers; project management of large field demonstrations; appliance standards development; measurement, evaluation, and documentation of performance.
