Programmable Infrared Surface Emissivity (334)

Problem: Need for durable high-emissivity surfaces and infrared (IR) tagging and identification technology

Graphic showing surface with array of closely-spaced micropits that act as perfect black-body thermal emitters

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Circuits and Devices

PNNL Solution:

  • Cover surface with array of closely-spaced "micropits" that act as perfect "black-body" thermal emitters
  • The aperture of each pit is a thermal "pixel" in the array
  • Controllable micro-mechanical covers open or close each aperture
  • Results in emissivity control and/or IR camouflage/identification capability

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Surface physics, micro-electromechanical structures and systems, material preparation; thermal and optical systems analysis and integration; testing and analysis.
