Portable "Calibrator" Test Instrument (370)
Problem: Need inexpensive, portable, user-friendly tester for in-field validation of radiation sensor equipment operation.

PNNL Solution:
- Use DVD technology to enable adaptable "radiation source" testing
- Develop compact, integrated tester with single button operation
- Hardware design is independent of detector type
- DVD's recorded with radiation source specific pulse streams allow rapid testing of multiple systems
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs:
- Conceptual design development; digital electronics for interface to commercial DVD drive and for DAC to create simulated signals from DVD output; analogue electronics to properly shape DVD output pulses to simulate radiation detector signals; embedded software for DVD control and user interface; mechanical design for user-friendly packaging; design and operation documentation.
