Field "Calibrator" Validation (371)

Problem: Need validated, "cold" method for field calibration of gamma & neutron detector instrument electronics operation.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Controls and Measurements through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

• Select representative sources to evaluate calibrator performance
• Record live data using test sensor system with "hot" sources
• Record "cold" test data using calibrator with appropriate DVD
• Compare "hot" and "cold" instrument electronic output results
• Results validated suitable operation

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs:

• Nuclear radiation testing with neutron and gamma sources; computational modeling of source and measurement configuration to aid in data interpretation; test planning; data interpretation; conducted practical demonstration for independent review committee.
