Wireless Sensing for Rotating Equipment (211)

Problem: Need to acquire important sensor data measured on rotating equipment without special wiring and interconnects

Diagram showing various components of wireless sensing equipment

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Instruments

PNNL Solution:

  • Mounted temperature sensor into bolt on rotating paper dryer drum
  • Developed small signal processor and radio communicator module
  • Evaluated performance during tests on operating equipment
  • Results agreed with baseline, contact measurement data

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Analog and digital circuit design and implementation; compact, low power electronic design; sensor selection and interface design; microprocessor application with embedded software; energy efficient task scheduling; compact RF antenna design; RF communication links; packaging design for compact, robust deployment modules.
