Scientific Diving for Data Collection (182)

Photos showing divers and underwater work

Problem: Need human presence to collect data and validate some measurements with minimal underwater disturbance

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart):

Measurement and Analysis Method Development through Measurement and Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

Provide specialized field sampling

  • Scientific divers offer direct access to marine environments for sensor placement, sample acquisition, and direct visual validation of some measurements
  • Support prototype sensor/instrument validation before final engineering
  • Simplified collection of complementary data (e.g., underwater video and photos)

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs (additional description): Diving in the coastal zone presents numerous challenges unique to this dynamic environment. Wide variations in currents, temperature, visibility, and pollutant factors, are common. Battelle divers, experts in a variety of scientific disciplines applicable to multidisciplinary programs, stress the importance of safety and training in all underwater expeditions.
