Evaluation of Grid Monitoring Technology (480)

Problem: Determine if "SynchroPhasor" hardware provides needed improvements in electrical grid operating data.

Illustration of phase and amplitude differences

Project Activity Scope (from Electronics Technology Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems.

PNNL Solution:

  • Tested and compared different types of "SynchroPhasor" hardware to validate data accuracy and precision
  • Evaluated SynchroPhasor data recorded across wide area grid to confirm proper long-range operation
  • Determined if data quality was sufficient to support advanced operation analysis and controls

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Data presentation and interpretation, development, application of power system simulation algorithms, use of synchrophasor data, study of electric economics impact on power system operation, market simulation, use of major power system simulation software including Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) software from General Electric, Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E) from Power Technologies International, and HABITAT/DTS (AREVA T&D).
