Problem: Develop long lifetime sensor modules for installation inside sealed waste containers (NO container penetrations)
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits & Devices through Controls & Measurements
PNNL Solution:
- Power enclosed sensor module (e.g., pressure, temperature, chemicals, etc.) with heat from nuclear waste decay
- Battery powered radio module on container exterior for sensor networking & data transfer
- Acoustic coupling to relay data from enclosed sensor(s) to radio module
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Analog and digital circuit design & implementation; compact, low power electronic design; sensor selection & interface design; microprocessor application with embedded software; energy efficient task scheduling; compact RF antenna design; RF communication links; packaging design for compact, robust deployment modules.
