RF Tags for Monitoring Animal Behavior (299)
Problem: Need minimally disruptive method to remotely monitor the feeding habits of protected, migratory birds
Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits and Devices through Integrated Systems
PNNL Solution:
- Developed acceptable concept for small Radio Frequency (RF) tags with sensors to detect bird feeding activities
- Tag monitors and reports when the bill of each instrumented bird dips down into the water for feeding and tips up for swallowing
- The tag also records use patterns of instrumented animals
- Wildlife specialists employed tags to complete successful field study
- Adhesive degradation results in bird losing tag after several weeks (no residual effects)
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Radio frequency (RF) field theory for antenna design and field propagation; information theory for evaluation of read/write distance effects on data transfer rates; analog and digital electronics design; surface mount electronics development; prototype RF tag design, fabrication, and evaluation; lab testing; test planning and analysis; documentation of technical basis and results.
