Semi-Passive RF Tag Summary (293)

Semi-passive Tag Background:

Semi-passive tags have a small on-board battery that augments the backscatter data exchange. These tags have communication range of ~100 meters, the capability to perform monitoring and control, and perform diagnostics. These tags also have a low data bandwidth. These tags can not initiate communications, they must be read.

Application Dependent Customizable Features:

  • Frequency band — 915MHz (ISM1) and 2450MHz (ISM2)
  • Power management — not required — the battery is not normally being used
  • Battery sizes
  • Variety of sensor capability — temperature, humidity, shock, tamper, etc.
  • Encryption algorithms less important since tag does not transmit, it only controls reflection of RF back to reader
