High Dynamic Range Laser Source (142)

Optical Head (R) with Missile Seeker Unit (L) Optical Head (R) with Missile Seeker Unit (L)

Problem: Develop a high dynamic range laser designator simulator to perform laboratory testing of missile seekers

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors & Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed simple method for high dynamic range (107) with continuous control of laser source intensity
  • Designed compact source layout using fiber-optic link. The souce had to meet demanding test criteria and serve as the basis for an integrated Missile Seeker Test System (50)

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical system design; polarization optics; lasers (source and alignment functions) and optical detector equipment application; radiometeric testing to confirm source met performance specifications; mechanical design for optical mounts and integrating assemblies consistent with integrated system requirements; electro-mechanical equipment to enable computer-controlled operation; component procurement, assembly, and shakedown testing; design documentation; operation and alignment procedure development; installation at client facility; client staff training.
