Problem: Develop miniature, integrated sensor-communicator modules to autonomously record and report data

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Circuits & Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Designed module with sensor, micro-controller, battery, and RF data transfer link for stand-alone operation
  • Programmed for data acquisition and long "sleep" periods to reduce energy use
  • Developed central station for data acquisition, analysis, and reporting
  • NOTE: Module design is sensor flexible
  • R&D 100 Award winner in 2001
  • FLC Award winner in 2002

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Analog and digital circuit design and implementation; compact, low-power electronic design; sensor selection and interface design; microprocessor application with embedded software; energy-efficient task scheduling; compact RF antenna design; RF communication links; packaging design for compact, robust deployment modules.
