Automated Printed Circuit Board Repair

Problem: Develop automated system to remove and replace faulty components from Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed PCB mechanical handler with grinder and laser de-solderer for defective component removal
  • Employed electronic vision system for component identification and location
  • Demonstrated system successfully for the efficient removal and replacement of components on customer PCBs

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Mechanical system design for board handler, component removal control, solder/chip removal, new component insertion, and automated component soldering; optical system design for stereo vision system, laser de-solder, and solder subsystem; electronics for subsystem control and inter-system interfaces; software development for system control and user interface; system demonstration with client PC boards.
