Evaluation of Formed Metal Test Pieces (414)

Graphic - Ultrasonic Evaluation of Test Piece Thickness Distribution

Problem: Nondestructively determine test piece thickness distributions to allow metal forming process optimization.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart):
Measurement & Analysis Method Development through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Utilize ultrasonic measurement system to record pulse-echo data for samples on desired test grid
  • Determine sample thickness from the recorded ultrasonic data
  • Prepare thickness distribution map
  • Compare predicted and observed data to allow model revisions and forming process improvement

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Establish measurement grid based on modeling predictions (i.e., identify critical forming areas); use laboratory ultrasonic instruments to validate metal integrity and to measure test piece thickness at grid points; analyze data to produce line-plots of thickness and 3-D thickness maps; compare results to model predictions to allow model refinement and validation.
