Underwater Acoustic Cross-Sections (217)

Two model submarines Upper Image: Image of model with NO acoustic absorbing materials applied to hull.
Lower Image: Image of model with acoustic absorbing materials applied to sections of hull (black bands).

Problem: Need methods to determine underwater acoustic signatures of naval vessels using short range measurements

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart):
Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed underwater acoustic holography measurement system
  • Developed data analysis algorithms
  • Developed software to allow effective, near-real time data analysis using laboratory computers
  • Successfully demonstrated method on model naval vessels

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Acoustic field theory; acoustic field interactions with liquids & materials; acoustic transducer/detector design and evaluation; analog & digital electronics design; holographic data interpretation method development; computer software development (system control, data acquisition, data analysis); system integration.
