Physical Characterization of Underwater Areas (360)

Research vessel with instrument sled photos

Problem: Need to characterize underwater bottom surfaces, identify and map key features, and detect signs of recent activity.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement and Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Use small, tethered underwater instrument sled suspended below research boat to survey target region
  • Tailor instrument suite to obtain needed data (e.g., underwater video, flow meters, lasers for spatial data, turbidity sensors, depth sensors, etc.)
  • Analyze and integrate multi-sensor data and combine with real time GPS to prepare comprehensive GIS maps

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Optical camera equipment design and deployment; electronics development for sensor drivers; advanced signal processing; system configuration, data measuring and classification of physical habitats; data acquisition, management and analysis; mechanical design for hardware mounting; field testing; planning and performance evaluation; validation testing; data analysis and reporting.
