Forensic Characterization of Handwriting (139)

Handwriting analysis Three samples of handwriting are shown. They have been cropped to the 2n x 2n format required for a 2-D Fourier transform. 2-D transforms are shown with one, while not written by the same person, identified as a possible match.

Problem: Develop method for automated screening and forensic examination/characterization of handwriting samples

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement and Analysis System Applications

PNNL Solution:

  • Measured selected features of digitized writing samples (height, slope, letter spacing, etc.)
  • Statistically evaluated features for efficacy as handwriting discriminators
  • Evaluated holistic metrics (Fourier analysis, fractal characteristics, etc.) suitable for automated screening

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Image processing and analysis; statistical analysis methods; artificial neural networks and related methods.
