Monitoring Fish Movement In-situ (358)

Field Deployable Sonar System showing grpahical representation of fish motion from analysis of sonar data

Problem: Need a reliable, non-invasive method to track fish motion and behavior in areas of interest (e.g., near structures).

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Hydroacoustic sonar arrays (mobile and fixed) provide spatial information with minimal impact on fish behavior
  • Tailor array design for specific site
  • Develop data analysis and summary visualization methods to facilitate understanding of key information
  • Data allows objective assessment of natural and structure effects

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Acoustic physics; sonar equipment design and deployment; electronics development for probe drivers, signal processing and balance of system; algorithm development for data integration to track fish and other underwater objects fine scale motion; computer software for system control, test performance, data acquisition and analysis; mechanical design for hardware mounting; field test planning and performance; data analysis and reporting, hydrology and other environmental monitoring.
